hawaii trip

We are taking a trip to Hawaii with our 7 month old. I have two concerns-- the airplane ride and the time change. Do you have any advice for the 5 hour flight? Also, there is a 3 hour time difference. I'm afraid this is going to mess up her schedule and I will be up with her in the middle of the night (because she'll think it's morning!).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Ah, if only there was an easy answer but long hauls with babies are just that -- long hauls. What you should do: call the airline to see if you can get a bassinette; so your baby might sleep on the flight easier. Jet lag usually takes three days to get over -- Hawaii may be more difficult because it's a reverse jet lag (if you're coming from the East Coast). You should try and vary your child's schedule bit by bit BEFORE you go to get into "Hawaii time," though I'm not sure how realistic that is. Other parents swear by Benadryl as a way to get baby to sleep. However, for some children it makes them wired so you should try it out at home first, to make sure it "works."
