Airplanes

I am thinking about taking m baby from where I live in Kansas to NY to visit family for Thanksgiving. I went to travel sites to start booking my ticket and it asked me if I want my baby on my lap or a seat.  Which is best?  Do I need to pay for my infant if I choose the seat?  I haven't been in an airplane in a long time.   My baby will be 6 mos by then.  Thank you Sarah
