I was recently diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes and I am in my 8th month of pregnancy.
I am scared and was looking to see if anyone out there on these boards has experienced this and if so, what did they do for comfort.

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes when I was pregant. I completely changed my diet and as a result. I ended up having to go on insulin at night. Everything I sacraficed during my pregnancy was well worth, because my daughter was born healthy and neither her nor I have diabetes now. She will be a 1yr in September and is the joy of both mine and my husband's life. |

I've known several people who had gestational diabetes, as well as many people who have type one or type two diabetes.
The key is to check your blood sugar frequently. You may be put on insulin, and it's easy to give yourself the shot.
A healthy pancreas keeps your blood sugar somewhere between 80 to 100. If it gets too high, you may feel disoriented, your skin may feel hot and dry, and you pee a lot.
If your blood sugar gets too low, your skin will be cold and clammy (you sweat a lot) and you're even more disoriented.
I have a saying: "Hot and dry, sugar's high. Cold and clammy, need some candy."
If your blood sugar gets too low, keep some orange juice or some sweet drink around. That can bring your blood sugar back up fairly quickly.
Your doctor or nutritionist can give you a list of healthy foods. |

I had gestational diabetes while I was pregnant... I found out in my 6th month (I was tested early because of having PCOS)... I changed my diet (and still on it) and tested my blood sugar levels 4 times a day... and ended up on insulin 2x a day... first thing after waking up and just before bed... I was taking a short acting and a long acting at both times...
My daughter and I both tested fine after she was born, and I still test myself a few times a week since I still get the testing supplies sent to me...
I am still on the diet, because getting GD is a sure fire sign that you will get type 2 diabetes later on in life... but, with some changes you can put it off as long as possible...
The other thing is they watched my weight like a hawk! I only gained 20 pounds (8 of it was my daughter) and lost the rest once I recoved from my c-section...
The other thing that kept me sane while I was dealing with this was all the awesome things made with Splenda... Splenda is ok during pregnancy... nutrasweet is not... if you need a list of yummy things that kept me sane contact me and I will fill you in...
