My son has food allergies

Ask a Pediatric Nutriction Expert

My son who has just turned one years old has several severe food allergies: eggs dairy wheat and avocados I am still feeding him breast milk but I am concerned that he is not eating enough solids Ever since we started solids at six months he has been a challenge It sometimes takes over an hour to try to get him to eat a tiny little bit of food he refuses by closing his mouth tight or throws finger foods on the floor He plays with the food I am concerned that he is low on the growth chart too: 27 75" and 19 4lbs He did fine right up until he started solids he was in the 50th percentile then started to drop Neither myself or my husband are short/small people I'm trying to think of more foods to feed him but it seems that nearly everything particularly baby food has wheat eggs or dairy in it He's drinking about 18 oz of expressed breast milk a day I'm at a loss of any new ideas to encorage my little guy to eat I so envy those mothers who say that their babies open their mouth "like a little bird" to receive their food This never happens Thank you for any help

Expert Post Viewd: 3 Posted: 7/8/09 6:51 pm Posted by: Replies: 0

Ask a Pediatric Nutriction Expert

I currently have a 5 and half month old that is showing no interest in eating very much for almost two weeks now He was currently eating 5 bottles 5 6 oz and two feeding of cereal and fruits/veg He cut back on the bottles to 4 which was understandable since he really started eating the solids Now though he is refusing to take only about 3 oz of formula at a feeding and not eating much of his solids either THe only time he will eat a good bottle is before bedtime he will eat 6 oz We talked with our doctor and she switched us to 3 solids meals a day with the bottle immediately following the breakfast and lunch but he really wont take any formula right after eating solids We have even waited 30 minutes or so He will sleep about 11 hours at night and when he wakes up in the morning never wants to eat right away so I wait til he seems hungry and then feed him He still won't eat much He is maybe getting 18 oz of formula a day I am just at my end trying to figure out what he likes and how and when to get him to eat I want to make sure he is getting enough daily nutrients He wakes up between 7 730 for the day and takes first nap between 9 930 His last bottle for the day is between 8 830 pm I thought he might be teething because he is gnawing on things a lot and drooling but I have tried giving him relief before eating such as teething tablets oragel sucking on something cold and even tylenol Nothing seems to work I just didnt know if it could decrease his appetite that much Could there be an underlying problem or is it just a phase ANy advice or suggestions on the schedule would be great I am getting desperate:(

Expert Post Viewd: 8 Posted: 4/20/09 5:12 pm Posted by: Replies: 0

Ask a Pediatric Nutriction Expert

my husband and i are very concerned about our 3 year old He does not like to eat only likes to drink things This has been a battle his whole 3 years of life he prefers for us to feed him baby food or food that is mashed from the blender we are concerned he is not getting the vitamins or nutrients he needs so we give him vitamins but it is still bothering me He is NOT our fist child we have 2 older children( 8 and 9) and NEVER experienced this kind of problem The older kids eat evrything and anything you put in front of them But our youngest refuses to eat mostly everything we have only been abl;e to get him to eat things like: spagetti mac n cheese cookise pudding applesauce lasaunga soup ramen noodles chicken (to an extent) steak(once in awhile) cake chips crackers muffins cereal any kind of liquid to drink and i think that is it he does not like anything that is cold only things warm I figured he wasnt eating because dinner or food would get cold So i tried warming the food up as soon as it would get warm This did NOT work however I talked to our peditrician and he seems to think this is okay as long as hes eating SOMETHING he says and drinking plenty of fluids and taking vitamins But i am still concerned He IS a healthy active 3 year old but just doesnt eat as much as we would like to see i guess He also will go 2 3 days with out wanting to eat granted he still drinks his milk water juice whatever it be By the 3rd day he wants to eat but only wants little portions at a time Then fuses when we try to feed him til he finally i think get so hungry he just eats He also does NOT like to feed himself We still have to do it for him another problem He does not like to touch food We tried many spoons forks etc And nothing he wants momy n dady to feed him This is our last child and everyone told us WE spoiled him too much But honestly they dont know as to the extent we have tried to get him to be more self efficient he just doesnt want to be Or maybe we are just a little rusty it has been awhile since we had a toddler in the house his brothers are like 5 and 6 years older than he is Anyway we just would like some honest suggestions for our toddler i know you can only give suggestions but this is what we are looking for thank you so much :)

Expert Post Viewd: 207 Posted: 2/9/09 7:24 pm Posted by: Replies: 1

Ask a Pediatric Nutriction Expert

My daughter is right at 8 months old Absolutely loves solids and generally takes bottles pretty well until recently My question though is how much formula and solid food should she be taking Her pediatician says as long as she gets 16 oz of formula a day she will be ok but she would like it if she gets closer to 32 oz As of right now she takes 5 bottles during the day that are between 6 7 oz but rarely finishes them She has started waking up in the middle of the night to feed This has just started in the last month I thought maybe she wasn't getting enough during the day They say you can ween babies from eating in the middle of the night but I have yet to figure out how If I don't feed her she will scream until I do feed her and believe I can wait for a while but then I feel guilty for possibly "starving" her

As far as the solids go I have had mixed opinons on this A nutritionist that I spoke with said that really my daughter doesn't even need solids until she is a year old and off formula The doctor says one jar of fruit and one jar of vegy a day Like I said she likes solids but I am so worried that she get enough formula I have tried to cut back on the solids so she will finish the bottles

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Expert Post Viewd: 243 Posted: 10/28/08 8:28 pm Posted by: Replies: 1

Ask a Pediatric Nutriction Expert

My son is 5 weeks old today and feeds 3 oz every 3 4 hours He started on Similac Advance and stopped burping and ended up with severe gassiness so we changed him to similac isomil After one week the same thing happened WE are now giving him Alimentum formula and he burps and gets hiccups alot now but his swallowing is very loud and gets very fussy during and after feeding even though we use gas drops after every feeding We usually end up holding him against our chest for 30 60 minutes after each feeding because he cries if we lay him down Do you think it could be reflux Any suggestions

Expert Post Viewd: 227 Posted: 9/29/08 12:46 pm Posted by: Replies: 1

Ask a Pediatric Nutriction Expert

My son is 6 weeks old and for the past month or so he has been very fussy He grunts and pulls his legs up towards his chest and also strains like it is difficult for him to have a bowel movement The pediatrician says that it is gas and that I should give him mylicon drops3 times a day with meals I have gone through an entire bottle of the gas drops and we are working on bottle number 2 His belly button is also sticking out and the doctor says that it will go down eventually I don't know if all the symptoms he is having is related but I know that he is in pain and he cries so much that it makes me want to cry Is there anything else that it could be other than just gas

Expert Post Viewd: 219 Posted: 9/24/08 1:56 am Posted by: Replies: 1
