cry it out method more less Question My 9 month old daughter just started having sleep problems a few weeks ago She has been sleeping through the night quite well up until now When she woke up in the night she would play talk to herself and ultimately put herself back to sleep Now that separation anxiety has kicked in she wakes up and becomes hysterical acutely aware that she is by herself So here is my question: I have tried "crying it out" while going in to reassure her periodically This only makes her feel abandoned over and over again Each time I leave she becomes more and more agitated Any advice I cannot bear the thought of letting her cry it out ALL by herself and think that her parents aren't there for her I'm really at my wits' end so any advice you can give would be appreciated Oh and I do use the sound machine like you recommend It helps some nights but not others (How loud should it be Could it affect a baby's hearing if  it is too loud ) Thanks

Rejecting solids more less Question My 8 month old was eating solids quite well until about a week ago Now every time I sit him down to eat he starts to cry and shuts his mouth really tight I still breastfeed him I am worried because he clearly is not taking in enough food as he wakes up constantly during the night He shows no signs of being ill and is a very active baby already capable of crawling and pulling himself up to standing Help When should I breastfeed him so that he doesn't reject his solids Thanks

mystery illness more less Question My 2 1/2 year old son has always been very healthy he gets lots of exercise and eats healthy foods Well the other night I put him in bed but he was very full of energy and wouldn't stay in bed to sleep The room was fairly warm because of the summer heat so I thought maybe that it was an uncomfortable temperature for sleeping (I felt his forhead which felt a little clammy ) So I let him get up I figured we would try again once it cooled down He was up for a bit and asked for some cereal to eat He had a small bowl of rice krispies and milk After he finished he went and laid down on the couch I finished cleaning the kitchen and went and sat with him After a bit he started to settle and cuddled in to go to sleep His back was to me and I thought he was sleeping when my husband walked by he stopped and waved his hand in front of our sons face and said he looks really weird right now like he's sleeping with his eyes open My husband got down in front of his face and  started talking to him with no response I told him to let him be and stop trying to wake him up as he has slept with his eyes partially open before when he has been really tired I figured he was sleepy enough I could try and put him back in bed So I carried him to his bed and laid him down when I laid him down his eyes were open but he didn't seem to be looking at anything I spoke to him and he didn't respond Then I noticed in the light he looked really pale and his lips seemed purpleish I touched his lips and he never moved not a blink nothing he then made noises like he was going to throw up I grabbed him and ran to my husband saying something is wrong our son then threw up twice and was incredible pale we decieded to take him to the hospital  Then very quickly  his body just went limp his eyes were open and his head fell to the side I thought for sure he wasn't breathing I have never been so scared in my life  We rushed to the nearby hospital my son was lifeless for the whole car ride there and I thought I was losing my son right there in my arms  After getting to the hospital they gave him some oxygen and he started to come around he then broke into crying and cried for about 10 minutes before falling asleep We stayed at the hospital and he sleep through the night without incident He had blood tests a urine test chest x ray is heart was checked and everything came back great He is still waiting to get a brain scan(not sure what they called it) It has been 2 days since this happened and our doctors don't know what caused it I am so uneasy because not knowing what caused it means it could happen again Me and my husband cannot take our eyes off him for a moment So I am asking anywhere looking for ideas or suggestions on what this could be I am so unable to relax afraid this could happen again Do you have any ideas what could cause something like this to happen and what do you think the likelyhood of a repeat occurance could be I realieze this is a hard question but to our knowledge he was not bit by any bugs and hadn't eaten any new foods He did sustain a bumb to the head at a store he leaned back as I was carrying him and hit the side of his head on a card rack Please if you could offer any help I would appreciate it I am asking everywhere trying to find out if anyone else has experienced anything like this Thank you for your time

Sleep Time more less Question Hi I really hope you can help me I am desperate I have a fourteen week daughter who until recently slept really well We swaddled her and from birth she usually only woke up once in the night to feed   Recently she has begun to break free of the swaddle but doesn't sleep that well without it   Even when she doesn't break free of the swaddle she has begun to wake up at 12 and just is cranky (doesn't cry but you can tell she is fussing and wants to cry but is just too tired) last night she did it for twenty minutes and then i went in and gave her the paci and she went to sleep   she woke up at 3 i fed her and she seemed starving put her down and she went to sleep (at this point she had one arm out of the swaddle) i woke up at 4:30 out of the swaddle we swaddled her and she fussed without really crying for 15 minutes or so and then i went in gave her the paci and she was fine   i should also say that every night we put her down she cries for thirty minutes or more (with us checking on her periodically) until i pick her up for 30 seconds and give her the paci put her down and she goes to sleep   we usually put her to bed around 8 because she really wants to sleep at this time if anything her sleep time could probably be around 6:45 because that is when she starts getting fussy and tired but we try to push through and give her a bath (which she loves) and feed her and by the time all is said and done its around 8 she actually naps really well the only bad thing is that i usually have her pretty much asleep before the nap (i know that its wrong but hearing her cry is just awful and she just never stops on her own)    she usually naps for an hour around 8:30 or 9 then goes down again around 11:45 till about 2:30 then again at 4 if anything i feel like she wants to nap too much and i guess that is why i don't just put her down in her crib to cry it out I just want my nights back Tonight we are not swaddling her at all and we are almost desperate enough to let her sleep on her stomach she naps that way sometimes or on her side and does really well   Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

feeding time more less Question Our 3 month old has been sleeping through the night since 6 weeks We have her on a 4 hour feeding schedule (formula) and her final feeding is at 10pm She sleeps until 6am when we wake her up for the first daily feeding My question is how to drop the 10pm feeding back to an 8pm time I know to reduce the time slowly in 15 minute increments but she takes 5 oz of formula at 6pm and I am afraid she will not be hungry at 8pm So should we feed her less or just what she will take at that time If she takes less will she be okay on her caloric intake for each day (5 feedings of 5oz) She is getting very cranky in the 8pm hour so I think she is ready for this

nighttime - sleep questions - 10 week old more less Question Hello First of all I'd like to say THANK YOU for all of your great advice in MomsOnCall   We started following the routine with our son 3 weeks ago when he was refusing to nap and had gotten into an awful over tired no sleep cycle (he was 7 weeks old at the time)   Anyway with your suggestions & routine he is back to his happy laid back self and napping beautifully it worked the first day we tried it   He'll fight sleep every once in awhile but we usually only have to go in 1 2 times before he is sound asleep My questions pertain to night time The first couple of nights on the routine Connor slept from 10:30PM 4:30 AM and we were ecstatic he'd been getting up every 2 hours when this no napping cycle began   Lately he has started waking more often and I'd love your advice on what to do when this happens   He's 10 weeks old now and I'm still using the 2 8 week routine because he's not yet sleeping through the night Our typical day looks like this: 6:30: Connor wakes up wide awake but not hungry   My husband gets up with him 8:00 Feed & Play (I am using breastmilk exclusively we supplement one botter per day for the bedtime feeding but no formula; feedings usually take 20 30 min; no longer than 30) 9:15 9:30: Nap 11:00 Feed & Play 12:15 12:30 Nap 2:00 Feed & Play 3:15 3:30 Nap 5:00 Feed & Play sometimes he will take another short nap sometimes he'll stay awake during this time 7:00 Supper Feeding 8:30 9:30 quiet time; usually he dozes off 9:30: Bedtime routine 10:00 10:15 Bedtime Feeding (takes 6 6 5 oz breastmilk via a bottle) Recently: 2:30 AM Connor wakes up crying we'll try to calm him with a pacifier for a bit but I end up feeding him after awhile and he seems genuinely hungry   Will usually eat 15 20 min   Then he wakes again at 4:30 he shouldn't be hungry again so I try to calm him with a pacifier this morning I went back and forth for an hour and he dozed on & off finally at 5:30 I fed him again b/c I was exhausted & it had been 3 hours   Then he was up again at 6:30 ready for the day He typically goes down really easily after eating during the night I am just wondering what advice you have to keep him from waking when he's not truly hungry   He is truly crying not just fussing when he wakes up   Should I use the cry it out method in the middle of the night   What should I do when he spits his pacifier out and starts crying again   Should he nap less during the day   At night we typically let him cry 8 10 minutes before going in; probably closer to 5 in the middle of the night   The swaddle worked wonders for the first 2 weeks but this weekend we switched to a sleep sack b/c he was consistently getting out of the swaddle   He manages to move all over the crib now so we've also removed the sleep positioner   We also use the white noise machine I would welcome any advice that you can give THANK YOU again Carrie

inconsistent napping more less Question Hello it's me again (I posted about schedules about a month ago) Here is my current issue My baby is now almost 10 weeks old She sleeps all night without a peep Our problem is naps At naptime when we are home she will sleep only 20 40 minutes and wake up crying This happens at almost every nap I have tried everything to get her to go back to sleep and nothing seems to work for us It really doesn't matter if I go in there and shush her or if I let her cry the result is the same no sleep and more crying As the day goes on it is worse because she is exhaused Any advice It is especially tough because I usually end up getting her up after a hour or so in which it is almost time to feed I nurse her and she is sleep almost immediately becuase she is so tired I will add that we are not on a strict by the clock routine because I have a preschooler that I take to school twice a week and she ends up falling asleep in her carseat (which she sleeps great in most of the time) Thanks Brooke

Toddler hit head, Vomiting more less Question Hi I have a question My 18 month daughter hit her head on Monday and once she cried and continued to carry on I didn't think much about it In fact the following day (about 24 hours after the hit) she began vomiting sporadically and continued so for about 12 hours The next morning she seemed fine but then in the afternoon (after her nap) she was out of sorts; for example she was very tired legs and arms seemed like jello she kept wanting to lay down After a discussion with the triage nurse of my daughter's pediatric office my husband and I and our 2 5 year old took her to the ER (too late for an office visit) Of course my daughter's behavior was normal and the doc stated that she seemed fine but we wouldn't know for sure unless we got a CT scan At this point we had already been at the ER for 4 hours it was close to midnight and a miserable visit with a 1 and 2 year old so we opted to go home and revisit the issue in the morning So this morning my daughter's pediatric office called to follow up and the nurse said my daughter's doc was out but would follow up with another and call me back well I never heard back from her and felt this nagging feeling that the CT scan should be done but let it slide until I heard from the nurse 4 o clock rolls around and no word from the nurse so I tried to call but the phones were switched over and I waited about 20 minutes but no one ever answered Anyway I let it go and thought my daughter seemed fine Well this evening I put her to bed and she went to sleep but since awoke vomiting my husband is taking my daughter first thing in the morning to the doctor to have the CT scan my question is what is the possibility of it being a brain injury the symptoms seem awfully coincidental and she exhibited no signs of being ill other than hitting her head Anything else I should be aware of as well I apologize for the lengthy email thanks for your time
