purple hands and feet more less Question I have a set of 20 month old boy/girl twins who both got sick this past week with some kind of stomach flu   They have both been throwing up (which has now subsided)   And now both have very loose stools What concerns me the most is that they have both experienced this strange blue ness of their hands and feet   Especially my son (it seemed much worse and longer lasting with him)    It happened shortly after he woke up in the morning   His feet and hands were a scary shade of purple blue and were very cold to the touch   I tried rubbing them to warm them up hoping that would help   But it only turned them a bright pink  then they went right back to purple   About 45 minutes later they looked normal    The other thing that happened that same day was this   My son had been standing stationary for several minutes   He must have had his knees locked or something because when I called him to come to me one of his legs was completely "dead"   He walked to me with this strange limp as though his knee could not bend   My husband and I guessed that his leg was simply asleep   But this was right after his purple hands/feet incident so I was really scared   This was on Sunday   It happened again on Monday but hasn't occured again since then What was this all about   Thank you for your time

yeast diaper rash more less Question My 5 month old son has a terrible rash covering his entire bum and the area above his genitals He had been on antibiotics about a month and a half ago and after taking them he broke out with a bad rash in the folds of his skin just beside his genitals I was given Nystatin to treat it and it cleared up in a couple days About a week ago my sons bum seemed extra dry so I put some Aveeno on it but it just got worse Thinking it was the start of a diaper rash I started putting Penaten on it But it still got worse So I seen the health nurse and she said his yeast infection was back and to use the nystatin on it I have been using it for 5 days now with no improvement I have also been giving him as much bare bum time as I can but it's hard because then he starts scratching at it I am getting very distressed and wondering if there is anything else I can be trying the poor little guy is so uncomfortable Also can a yeast infection spread to other parts of his body because the rash seems to be spreading little red rash spots from the diaper area up his lower back Any help would be appreciated

Waiting for book to arrive!!! more less Question Okay I ordered your moms on call book last night and can't wait for it to get here   I have been reading Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Baby and love it   So far you and that author have many of the same strategies   Everything you have helped me with so far has helped so I figured I can read one more book   While I am waiting for the book to ship I am wondering about the whole bedtime still   You said dinner at 6 no matter what then bedtime routine at 8:30 and last feeding at 9   That sounds very workable but I am wondering if from 6 9:30ish is too long of a period of wakefulness for him before going to sleep for the night   Will he just adjust to it

Quality of Sleep more less Question Thank you   I was treating him like a 12 week old and reading up information on 3 month olds   It helps to remember to go back to his due date and back track a little   I was keeping him up for 2 hour stretches which was too long he was overtired I believe   Another question that has come up   Today to give you an example he napped from 4:00 6:45pm   When he got up I changed him and fed him   Then we played and did some tummy time   He started getting fussy and was yawning so I started his Bed Time Routine at 7:40 then tried to nurse him at 8:00   He wasn't hungry so I just rocked him a little and put him down while he was stil sleepy   He was out by 8:30   Sooo my worry now is that he didn't get a good feeding at bedtime so he will most likely be up a little earlier to eat   Is there a better way I can do this   Should he be getting a "full" feeding at bedtime so that he sleeps for as long as possible for that initial stretch of time   By the way he usually sleeps about 5 hours   Now I'm afraid he'll be up earlier b/c he'll be so hungry

Switching to Formula more less Question I am now in the process of weaning Caden to formula since I'll be going back to work in a few weeks   In the past I've nursed him about 6 times a day   Now that he is sleeping better at night sometimes we only have time for 5 feedings   Since he was a preemie I'm a little nuts about making sure he is getting enough to eat (he's still such a tiny guy)   Once he is on strictly formula how many times a day should I be feeding him   He's 12 weeks (5 weeks corrected)

Quality of Sleep more less Question I noticed you mentioned that he should eat for 30 min and "then be up for 30 45 min at the most"   Are you referring to bedtime and nightly feedings or also during the daytime feedings     During the day I feed him right when he wakes  up so then he typically stays up for 2 hpurs or sdo afterwards   Should I be timing feedings differently

Quality of Sleep more less Question Hello   I followed your suggestions and put Caden on a schedule for eating/sleeping plus added in White Noise for him while he sleeps and it appears to be working okay so far   Just a reminder Caden is a 12 week old preemie (born 8 weeks early)   Problem is he has trouble sleeping every few nights or so (by that I mean the quality of sleep)   He doesn't cry too much but wakes up every hour grunting/wiggling around   After a little while he will let out a cry   I know it's not time for him to eat so I can't figure out what is up   He sleeps in a bassinet at the foot of our bed so I'll turn around put his pacifier back in his mouth and pat his side a little and then he'll go back down   Problem is he will be up again in about an hour sometimes less   I just feel like the while noise really helped him the first week but now is not doing much for him   Do you have any ideas for what I can do to make sure he stays asleep   Here's a typical "good" night/day for us   Tell me what you think please 8:00pm Bed Time Routine 8:30 eat 9:00 sleep (lately it's been taking longer to get him down more like 9:30 or 10:00) 2:00 eat 3:00 back to sleep 7:00 7:30  up for day/eat between 9:00 10:00 nap (around 2 hours) 12:00 eat 2:00 nap (around 2 hours) 4:00 eat 5:30 6:30ish (naps in swing usually have to wake him up b/c he would sleep longer but I'm afraid it will goof up his bedtime) 6:30 eat 8:00 Bed time routine all over again Look forward to hearing from you

Decrease in Milk Supply Still more less Question Hi Laura   I wanted to let you know how things ended up going   I heard back from the lactation consultant on Tuesday and she suggested I stop pumping completely and just nursed on demand   I did that the past  couple of days and now my supply seems to be back up again   I just fed him a bottle (breast milk previously pumped) and then pumped and was able to get 3 1/2 ounces which is around what I think he takes each feeding   Only problem now is I went to the pediatrician yesterday and found out he weights 7lbs 13 ounces which is a 1 lb 4 ounce weight gain from last month   It's not bad but I'm concerned he's not gaining enough   It's so hard with preemies b/c there are no set guidelines to follow     Thanks again for your help

Decrease in Milk Supply Still more less Question I am going to call the lactation specialist we saw when Caden was in the NICU tomorrow   I am getting really worried now   Today he had a lot of trouble with feeding (and we've never experienced this before)   I nursed him at 6:00 and he seemed hungry still an hour later so I nursed him at 7 then at 8 and at 9   Finally I just warmed up a bottle (previously pumped when I didn't have troubled pumping)   He took 2 1/2 more ounces fine and then went to sleep   So now it appears he is not gettting enough by breast   I even drank the Mother's milk tea today along with the "more milk" supplements   I am getting desperate here b/c I know the next step is to supplement with formula which I don't want to do if at all possible   Help   Any other suggestions for me   I'm so baffled b/c this just started happening and I can't figure out how to turn it back around and why in the world it's happening in the first place

Decrease in Milk Supply Still more less Question It's been a couple of weeks now and my supply seems to still be way down   It started decreasing right before Christmas so you had said it could be caused by stress   I have been pumping 2 3 times extra a day and taking More Milk supplements   My baby was a preemie so he takes about 3 1/2 ounces every 4 hours (he's 11 weeks old) and I'm afraid he may not be getting enough   I pump so that I can have an extra supply but each time I do I only get about 1 2 ounces total   It takes me just about a whole day to pump 2 3 times to get just one bottle's worth to freeze   I'm getting more worried like I said b/c it has been a while like this   What else can I do
