Sick Baby

Ask a Pediatrician

My son has endured some hard times in his first year of life He is the type that doesn't catch a cold but rather gets really sick In his first year of life he has had 2 respiratory infections 2 bouts of croup (within five weeks) 2 ear infections and 2 unusual episodes of high fevers (e g 104 7) All of the illnesses occurred suddenly (e g he was 100 all day and then suddenly starts coughing Few hours later we are running to the ER for breathing issues)

I'm completely puzzled by why he gets so sick given the following: 1) he had a fast non medicated birth 2) breastfeed on demand 3) co sleep and keep him close to us 4) feed him organic food 5) take him for fresh air every day and 6) play with a few babies We have also massaged and bathed him every night since birth He shows no visible signs of allergies and I have been slow to introduce anything considered a highly allergic type of food (e g dairy) I have also taken a very slow and delayed approach to vaccines Although we don't force sleep we try to encourage it via a routine Most of the time he will only sleep 12 hrs in a 24 hour period He rarely sleeps beyond 12 hrs even when he is sick

Can you give me any insight as to why my son gets sooooo sick Is there anything that I am doing that could possibly compromise his immune system Could it be sleep since every study I have read says that babies should sleep 15 hrs per day (my 1 yr old never sleeps that much)

Many many thanks in advance for any insight

Expert Post Viewd: 1 Posted: 5/26/08 1:23 am Posted by: Replies: 0

Ask a Pediatrician

I am not sure if you can help me but this is something I know nothing about and am not sure who to ask for advice At my sons last dentist appt the dentist said he wanted to run a drill between my 3 year old 4 bottom front teeth to open up more of a space for the tooth brush because he said there was a bit of decay between two of the teeth He said it was a quick procedure but it would require clamping his mouth open and having a parent physcially restrain him while it's being done

My son has been through alot in the last year following a seizure having a EEG and needing to be put under to have a broken tooth removed I really have a hard time holding my child down for something that is freaking him out unless it is absolutley neccessary

These teeeth are going to fall out anyways in a few years do you think they will really decay so much that they will start to cause him pain He does brush his teeth twice everyday with my help and since his appt we are trying to take extra care and trying to floss as well

I just don't know if this is something really neccessary for baby teeth or not any suggestions would be welcome

Thank you for your time and sorry if this isn't your department

Expert Post Viewd: 1 Posted: 5/24/08 3:24 am Posted by: Replies: 0

19 month old throws up every day please help

Ask a Pediatrician

My son is almost 19 months old and still eats baby food He throws up every day sometimes several times a day even though he is not sick He had GERD when he was little but it seemed to resolve itself by 5 months Table foods he can eat without a problem are cherrios bluberries bananas and such but he will gag and throw up even if his baby cereal is to thick He will even throw up stage 3 baby food sometimes He likes food just seems to have problems with chewing If I give him a tiny peice of steamed carrot it can take him up to 45 minutes to chew it up Needless to say he get very frustrated and would rather go hungry than have to eat anything that requires chewing so I end up forcefeeding him baby food and he still only gets half of what he is supposed to eat We only have one pediatrician in our town and he wont listen to me We cant afford to keep buying baby food and doing contant laundry We have another baby on the way and this has to stop Please help us

Expert Post Viewd: 1 Posted: 5/22/08 12:30 am Posted by: Replies: 0

Ask a Pediatrician

Dear Dr Vaccaro

Little Nicolas just turned 3 months on the 29th for the past 7 weeks since he has been on formula (Similac Advanced with Iron) he's been having a bad rashs First it started on his face (our pediatrician said it was ezcema) then after about 1 week when his face cleared up from using off the counter cortizone cream (per pediatricians direction) he started breaking out on his body This went on for over 6 weeks and each time the Dr would just say it was ezcema About 2 weeks ago he started having more frequent and runny bowl movements (6 7 times a day) with quite a bit of mucous I took him back to the pediatrician and he said he was most likely allergic to the protien in the formula and needed to switch what he was on So he recommended Similac Alimentum Hypoallergenic formula Nicolas has been on this for a little over a week now his skin has completly healed from head to toe and he just seems so much more content Much less spit ups and less burping However it's still taking him time ot get used to the taste as he had been on the other formula for quite some time it's clear he was having an allergic reaction to the formula from the very begining but what exactly is he allergic to dairy Do you think I could try putting him on soy formula The pediatrician told me that most probably he will not do well with Soy since it has same complexed protein as the first formula and that I should just keep him on the alimentum What are your thoughts Not all the stores in my area carry the Alimentum What would my alternatives be I am a first time mom and am not sure what brands of formula are best I am only familiar with Similac

Kind Regards

Gemma

Expert Post Viewd: 1 Posted: 5/1/08 2:18 pm Posted by: Replies: 0

19 month old clumsy walker

Ask a Pediatrician

My 19 month old son has been walking since 14 months He is still extremley wabbely and will run into everything and just falls in his tracks like he's dizzy Were not sure if this is normal cause we don't see a lot of other toddlers his age to compare He has immune defiecency problems (which no immune or hem/onc Dr that has tested him can figure out ) Can this be a symptom of any immune disorders The Immune Dr originally thought he had DiGeorge Syndrome however the tests came back negitive which he said does not 100 rule it out He also has pigment changes all over his body which were initailly being watched by our Ped suggestion for NF1 symptoms however the dermatologist stated to watch them; they are most likely changes as an effect of when he had RSV at 3 months Since no Dr can actually diagnose him with any reason he has limited WBC and T cells I immediately am weary about anything about him that doesn't seem right We just saw the hem/onc Dr who said his WBC are still dropping however not to the bottom of the scale to start shots every 2 weeks or for a bone marrow biopsy that he was thinking about wanting to do He has a follow up for a cell count in 4 months Should I take him to the Ped or talk to the Immune Dr about the clumseyness sooner then that

Expert Post Viewd: 132 Posted: 4/30/08 12:20 am Posted by: Replies: 1

Chronic fissures and c section

Ask a Pediatrician

I have a history of anal fissures chronic off and on for 10 years In the last 2 years the fissures worsened and I have undergone two operations to correct them unsuccessfully Due to this history my colon and rectal doctor recommended that I have a c section (worried about tearing and making situation worse as well as incontinence post vaginal delivery) My OB supports this decision Normally they do a planned c section at 39 weeks which would be Friday May 9th However my doctor will be out of town that day which leaves me the option of May 13th 3 days before my 40 week due date or May 6th 38 1/2 weeks (they only do c section on Tuesday and Friday) I am a very petite person 5'7" and started out at 108 pounds I am currently at 136 and am just over 36 weeks I have been having pre term contractions for the past 8 weeks and experiencing loose bowels almost daily for the past 2 weeks which aggravates my fissures (I think just as a result of the pressure and weight)

My question is which date you would recommend I want to do what is best for the baby's health as well as my own

Expert Post Viewd: 94 Posted: 4/21/08 11:41 pm Posted by: Replies: 1

Ask a Pediatrician

I have a 21 month old child that has been at the doctors office pretty much every 2 weeks since he was 3 months old He has tons of URIs and has had pneumonia twice within 6 months The months were April and January He had RSV at 7months got tubes in ears at 9 months He is a big baby 29 pounds so he is not havng failure to thrive which seems to have thrown lots of doctors off We have been to 3 immunologists/ allergists The last one was at Arkansas Childrens hospital and all his tests there were normal He did have one abnormal tetanus titer test but they redid it and it came back normal He now has had a random fever for 18 days He will have a normal temp in the morning and then start mid day at 100 5 101 5 at times Sometimes it is the opposite with waking up with a fever and it being gone by night He is really low on energy but eating normally He is cranky a lot and will just lay in his bed at night( 12 3ish) and just cry He does not cry for me to hold him or to get him out of bed he cries in his sleep and just lays there My pediatrician just did a mono test and it was negative too I am very frustrated at this point because I have known that there was something wrong for 21 months now I have had to take family medical leave from work because he cant handle a daycare situation He catches everything He is on regular dose of bactrum and has been for 3 weeks now he also took omnicef for 10 days on top of that because he has this fever and feels bad his lymphocytes are elevated The immunologist has pretty much written it off be cause all of their tests have come back normal My pediatricain is getting in touch with infectious diseases at childrens as we speak because she is stumped on why he is always so sick We thought that we would have some answers from his immunology tests but nothing showed up I cant sit back and just have them tell me " you just have one of those sick babies" This is abnormal and my pediatricain agrees He never gets just a cold it always is some type of infection WE went through 5 antibiotics with this last sickness/pneumonia before he ever got any better He gets better just never well PLEASE let me know where i can go for a mystery sick child

Expert Post Viewd: 136 Posted: 3/11/08 9:39 pm Posted by: Replies: 1
