Low DT antibody levels more less Question After dealing with frequent respiratory aillments with my  son my husband an I finally decided to bring him to a ped pulmonologist at a childrens hospital since our ped was just treating our son's symptoms with lot of med's and steroids (we just felt something else was going on and the ped nurse practioner kept ignoring my concerns) After some initial bloodwork (basic immune and milk/peanut allergy which was neg ) chest x ray (clear)  medicine changes and a change to a non dairy diet he is finally starting to get a bit better however for now we are putting the respiratory issues on the back burner (the Dr feels he may have asthma or abnormal bronchi) because the bloodwork came back with low D and T antibodies (from the DTP vaccine he had 6 months prior) which may be the reason why his colds last more than 2 weeks and go directly to his lungs within 10 hours of initial symptoms Were waiting to hear back from his latest CBC and CRP bloodwork done yesterday As for now he had his 12 month DTP vaccine yesterday and we now have to wait 3 weeks to see the immunologist for further bloodwork and answers My questions are (since I have 3 weeks to worry about this) 1 What will it mean if he once again has low DT(P) levels The pulmonologist mentioned antibody substitues from human plasma ( I read about sources from animal and bone marrow transplant) 2 He is starting preschool in 3 weeks will a low antibody level be a factor in him being more at risk to him getting sick from being around new kids/germs  3  Is there something else that can be going on such as an immune disorder that can prohibit his body from making the DT antibodies or is their something specific to the DT antibody production in the body that can be addressed  Any information will be of help to my sanity as I have stopped looking at webMD and reading in my physiology books from undergrad because everything seems to lead to Cancer and I know thats not whats going on Thanks

vaccines more less Question Dr Vaccard My due date is on 12/8/07 It is going to be a baby boy and my hospital is in New York City and I live in New Jersey I heard that once the baby is born he will be given Hepatitis B vaccine and Vitamin K injection My concern is that for a new born is it mandatory by law to do that Can we postpone it to later months And I also heard baby has to have many vaccines for the first few years I concern about the baby can stand with so many of shots in their stages My bother in law's son who is now 5 years old is having speech therapy he started learning walking and talking by about 3 and now at 5 he can only speak a few words I am afraid that this might be caused by the vaccines such as MMR people always links this to autism His little daughter who is at 3 does not at this problem I am so worry about that will happen in my baby as I know that boy has a higher chance of getting autism can I postpone the vaccines or can I request the doctor to give the MMR in separate shots my future baby doctor is in New York City what is your opinion in circumcision is it medically necessary My OB doctor said he will have the baby doctor checked it first before he would perform the circumcision so under what conditions the baby doctor will suggest circumcision is a must to do Thanks

My baby is eating less more less Question Dr Vaccaro My daughter is now 5 weeks old and I understand that her digestive system is changing but I'm a little concerned   I have spoken with her pediatrician and also took her in last Wednesday   She is sometime going a day without a bm   She is also cut back her eating dramatically She would eat 3 to 4 4 oz bottles plus a day and now she is only eating two ounces every two hours or so and going longer through the night   Is something wrong   My pediatrician did a rectal exam and checked for distention in her belly and couldn't find anything   He had me change her formula to Similac altheium (may be misspelled) and also recommended dark karo syrup in water to help with the lack of bm but she is still not eating as good as she was and I'm concerned I don't want her to get dehydrated; she is still have pretty regular wet diapers so I know the liquids are passing through but I don't know why she is still eating less   Is there anything else I can do   Do you have any suggestions to help with her constipation   Thanks Dana

allergies or more, more less Question lingering RSV effects or allergies My son had RSV from 3 4 months and now has had 2 more respiratory colds since which within 1 day he gets so bad that he is back on a neb (both other times were at 11 months and currently at 12 months ) I just brought him to the Ped yesterday and once again was told this is going to happen to him with every little cold because of him having the RSV so young but she said that he seems to have allergies and put him on Clarinex He is now on that the neb and triamenic yellow I hate to give him this much medication especially since it seems to happen so often I've tried to get a second opinion but most peds I call say they can't see him unless I switch to them permanetly or pay out of pocket Before he was diagnosed with RSV another Dr (at a walk in clinc) perscribed him Zyrtec for environmental allergies I didn't give it to him because I knew he was wheezing in his lungs and knew it was more In between these 2 bouts his pediatrician tells me to keep giving him triamenic yellow to help with decongestion but it never works  I understand teething can cause some of the irritation in his sinuses but he has other respiratory symtoms When he gets really active he huffs and puffs and starts to wheeze and he gets a runny nose often He doesn't cough too much except now he is coughing a lot  but if I don't give him anything thinking it just teething he seems to get worse and then he's back on meds His eyes seem to get red rings around them and just look irritated  The ped 's nurse practitioner that I go to mentioned he could have further respiratory problems developing such as  allergies or he could just grow out of all this I'm concerned because both my brother and I had various respiratory concerns as babies and were both in oxygen tents at one point and have had to use nebulizers all our lives when we get sick  I myself kept passing out during athletic practice or high intensity workouts and was told it might be asthma  however after 10 years was diagnosed with multiple heart valve regurgitations   Should I be concerned that he may have future respiratory complications or can he be developing allergies  What can I do to help determine the cause of his frequent wheezing and shortness of breath What are signs of asthma I should look for just in case Thanks

preschool question more less Question Dear Dr Vaccaro I have a 3 1/2 year old girl who is currently enrolled in preschool   The preschool that she goes to does not formally teach the alphabet and I am getting concerned because my daughter is very interested in learning her sounds/alphabet now   She loves to learn and read and even memorizes dozens of books that I read to her   Do you think it would be wise to switch her into a more academic preschool or supplement the current school she goes to with a tutor that does phonics and reading and/or myself teaching her the few things she is not getting in school   I don't want to push her too hard nor do I want her to be not stimulated and bored   We tried the more academic preschool today (where the children are 4 and 5) and the teacher said that my daughter had a hard time focusing/listening even though she felt she was very intelligent and mature   She thought I should have her tested for ADHD   Is this normal  for a three year old I am getting very concerned
