Pink Eye, Ear Infections & EarCheck Monitors Question We have an EarCheck monitor which apparently detects the amount of moisture/fluid in the ear in order to measure whether an ear infection is present If your child has pink eye & there is an accompanying ear infection would extra fluid be present Last year my 3 yr old had pink eye with an ear infection but he really had no nasal symptoms which he normally has with an ear infections My 6 month old now has pink eye (no cold symptoms) & the Ped's nurse just called in a Rx for eye drops & said no appt necessary (although Ped last year said she likes to see kids with pink eye to check for ear infections ) Anyway if we get concerned we'll definitely take him in but just wondering if the EarCheck monitor should still theoretically still work Thanks Angela Answer |

4 yr old sleeping patterns Question My son is almost 4 yrs old and still wakes up to come into my room to sleep at night He falls asleep in his bed after our bedtime routine but continues to wake up EVERY night to come into my bed My main concern is that it is not healthy for him to be waking every night Him sleeping with my husband and I was never a big issue But we are trying to conceive a second child and will obviously not have enough room for everyone I would like to do this soon because I don't want to make too many changes once he has a sibling Any suggestions Is this unhealthy to be waking during the night Answer |

How to get my 21 month old to sleep through the night? Question I have tried everything and nothing is working We lived in an apartment where the people upstairs (trying to get us leave) would bang on the floor all hours of the day and night to wake her up The daughter herself had a little one and was pregnant again so you would think that she would respect a baby needs their sleep We were looking to buy a house anyway but that just made us work harder to get away from that stuff We bought a house (settlement) when she was 6 months old I talked to her doctor about this issue and they told me to keep doing what I was doing because the noise had been tramatic for her and she would need time to adjust I think 15 months of the same routine is long enough I know that she can't help herself and I feel that I am failing her as a parent Please help me Answer |

Slow Weight Gain Question Hi Our daughter is 9 months 3 weeks old and only weighs 14lbs 8oz She is 27 5" long and her head is 44 8cm Her length and Head have stayed roughly in the same percentiles but her weight has been steadily dropping (percentile wise) She only gained a pound in the last 2 25 months She is now off the chart (< 3rd percentile) in weight and weight for length She is otherwise very healthy and developing rapidly The doctor checked for anemia today Hemoglobin was great She is very high energy stands on her own crawls responds to voices (claps waves on command) etc My wife began a fairly strict diet a couple of months ago and I'm wondering if that might be part of the problem b/c daughter has been and continues to be breast fed She has been eating blended and now solid foods for several months but only in the last 2 3 weeks has she shown any gusto and begun to eat decent amounts 2 3 oz per meal (3x/day) During the pregnancy we found out that we are both Cystic Fibrosis carriers but the amniocentesis said that our daughter only caught one gene so she's a carrier but won't get the disease No other signs of CF (no lung problems or weird stool) But the doc did mention it today so I'm wondering if the lab might have made a mistake (although they actually told us that daughter got my gene specifically and not mom's) Mom is tall (five foot nine) and I am five ten However I did develop very slowly and was only five foot even when I entered high school (14years old) Daughter only has one tooth so far (as my mom said I did at that age) so we're hoping that she is just a late bloomer What do you think Answer |

Immunizations Question My son is 15 months old and received his latest round of antibiotics on Saturday (it's Tuesday now) I should note that he does not receive the varicella or the hep a or Hep B vaccines Every time he receives his vaccines by the third or fourth day he is a lame duck He lays on his bed and sleeps and does not want to eat or drink or be held or anything else that involves another human This is completely contrary to his personality He is usually happy talkative (more than 30 spoken and 20 signed words now) and busy all the time Our pediatrician says I'm blowing it out of proportion and that it's not a big deal I disagree (one of the very few things we disagree on which is why we haven't left him yet ) What do you think I think he may be allergic to the injections or possibly actually getting viral infections (a rash will appear by Friday) from them Any thoughts would be more than we are getting now Tiffany |

Hypotonia Question Hi My 13 month old son was recently referred to a pediatric developmental specialist by his pediatrician The concerns are that he is not crawling walking attempting to crawl or walk; he is not voalizing as much as the norm for his age either and has a few fine motor delays as well (including being behind schedule with the sort of foods he can/will eat) The biggest concern at present is the large motor delays He is diagnosed as having hypotonia (also he is a LARGE baby and always has been) and the hopes are that with physical therapy he will catch up I was told that if he catches up in the large motor area he will likely catch up in the other areas as well as they are said to be connected What are your thoughts about this Should I worry about any cognitive delays As a note my son makes great eye contact and is very interactive and social He also communicates his needs through gestures/baby talk Thank you for your insight Rachel Answer |

4 Month Old Bowel Movements & Gas Question My son is formula fed He has always had a problem with gas especially between the hours of 2am 6am We were told that the gas was colic and that it would start to clear up around 3 months He is now 4 months and the gas has not let up It is smelly & you can hear his stomach gurgling & he is clearly uncomfortable He occasionally will have a BM every day for a couple of days but then he goes back to only having them every 2 3 days Often the size of the BM is not nearly as large as we would expect after 2 3 days The stools are soft though On the days he has a BM he does seem to be less gassy & sleeps better His Ped has now changed the diagnosis from colic to "that's just the way he is" The softness of his stools is her only concern the gas & discomfort are apparently of no concern I've had many suggestions: some say use apple prune or pear juice others say to add bulk to get it moving (like strained fruit or Oatmeal) What do you think (And yes we know about the gas drops we keep Mylecon in business) Thanks Answer |
