MMR shot and Autism more less Question I am getting ready to schedule my son's 12 month shots I havent researched too much on my own about the actual vaccines however I have heard of concerns with the MMR shot in particular with links to Autism Other then having RSV at 3 months and lingering respiratory problems since then my son is a very healthy 1 year old   I usually just go along with the recommended shots because the state requires them but want to make sure I completly informed for this particular shot especially after seeing an recent Oprah show where a mom seemed to think the shot was the start of her son's road to Autism I looked over the 2 studies from the UK that started the controversy but the study's have both been positively and negitively discussed I don't know what to believe Is the shot manditory by the state or school system (my son is starting pre school next month) Are there any concerns in your opinion to wait to get the shot Thank you

Red dots in mouth more less Question Hello I have a 27 month old daughter who is very healthy and active   I have two concerns right now: 1   She has been getting this scaly rash on her legs   I have been putting moisturizer on them but she scratches them until she leaves them scabby (they must be very itchy)   I have to keep her in long pants so that she won't scratch   Could this be eczema   It just looks pink and scaly and a little bit raised   She has a tiny patch on her stomach but a lot on her legs   This has been going on for about two weeks 2   I was brushing her teeth yesterday and noticed a tiny red dot on the inside of her cheek (about the size of a pin point but blood red)   It wasn't raised or anything so I decided I would just watch it   Tonight when I brushed her teeth I noticed that there were now 3 dots in her cheek   They don't seem to bother her   Should I be concerned about this   Should I take her to a dentist dermatologist  or to a pediatrician if I want to get them checked

cramping more less Question I have a 4 year old daughter who has been suffering from cramping for the last year and a half   It seems that the cramping is in the bladder but we aren't certain   She's been tested several times for UTI and they are always negative   She seems to get cramps when her bladder is full but not always   Sometimes the cramps cause her to wet herself be it a little or sometimes a lot   When the cramps hit she sits on the floor and pulls her knees up to her chest   It typically lasts between 10 20 seconds and then everything is fine she resumes what she was doing   We have had several tests done to see if anything is physically wrong   We've done upper GI and an ultra sound   She has taken Prevacid in case it was stomach related which it apparently wasn't so she's been off of that for awhile   She's currently on generic Levsin for intestinal cramping   It seems to help somewhat but it's merely a treatment for the symptom and not something that is helping us find the root cause   She is also on some OTC Claritin in case it was allergy related   We can't really tell if it makes a difference   The cramps really seem to come in streaks   Maybe one or two days a week she won't have any   Some days she may have one or two   Occasionally she will have many in a day Any ideas or suggestions

Plagiocephaly more less Question My son (Son #2) has plagio which Ped says is mild Against her opinion we are consulting with a neursurgeon next week re: helmet threrapy Our older son (Son#1) also had plagio (both sons had tortecollis) but his was a milder case & did not affect his forehead or position of his ears so we did not consider helmet therapy for him He is now 3 yrs old and while he still has a flat spot it is not nearly as bad as it used to be My questions are: 1) Do you know of any resources where we could view photos of older kids who had plagio who did not receive helmet therapy I'm intersted what their heads look like after 10 13 years of growing 2) In reading & talking to other parents it seems that Peds often downplay plagio and are not as quick to recommend helmet therapy as some other specialists Any thoughts as to why I thought maybe photos referred to in #1 above might explain why that nature helps correct or at least minimize the affects Thanks Angela Angela 0 281 7/20/07

cry it out method more less Question My 9 month old daughter just started having sleep problems a few weeks ago She has been sleeping through the night quite well up until now When she woke up in the night she would play talk to herself and ultimately put herself back to sleep Now that separation anxiety has kicked in she wakes up and becomes hysterical acutely aware that she is by herself So here is my question: I have tried "crying it out" while going in to reassure her periodically This only makes her feel abandoned over and over again Each time I leave she becomes more and more agitated Any advice I cannot bear the thought of letting her cry it out ALL by herself and think that her parents aren't there for her I'm really at my wits' end so any advice you can give would be appreciated

mystery illness more less Question My 2 1/2 year old son has always been very healthy he gets lots of exercise and eats healthy foods Well the other night I put him in bed but he was very full of energy and wouldn't stay in bed to sleep The room was fairly warm because of the summer heat so I thought maybe that it was an uncomfortable temperature for sleeping (I felt his forhead which felt a little clammy ) So I let him get up I figured we would try again once it cooled down He was up for a bit and asked for some cereal to eat He had a small bowl of rice krispies and milk After he finished he went and laid down on the couch I finished cleaning the kitchen and went and sat with him After a bit he started to settle and cuddled in to go to sleep His back was to me and I thought he was sleeping when my husband walked by he stopped and waved his hand in front of our sons face and said he looks really weird right now like he's sleeping with his eyes open My husband got down in front of his face and  started talking to him with no response I told him to let him be and stop trying to wake him up as he has slept with his eyes partially open before when he has been really tired I figured he was sleepy enough I could try and put him back in bed So I carried him to his bed and laid him down when I laid him down his eyes were open but he didn't seem to be looking at anything I spoke to him and he didn't respond Then I noticed in the light he looked really pale and his lips seemed purpleish I touched his lips and he never moved not a blink nothing he then made noises like he was going to throw up I grabbed him and ran to my husband saying something is wrong our son then threw up twice and was incredible pale we decieded to take him to the hospital  Then very quickly  his body just went limp his eyes were open and his head fell to the side I thought for sure he wasn't breathing I have never been so scared in my life  We rushed to the nearby hospital my son was lifeless for the whole car ride there and I thought I was losing my son right there in my arms  After getting to the hospital they gave him some oxygen and he started to come around he then broke into crying and cried for about 10 minutes before falling asleep We stayed at the hospital and he sleep through the night without incident He had blood tests a urine test chest x ray is heart was checked and everything came back great He is still waiting to get a brain scan(not sure what they called it) It has been 2 days since this happened and our doctors don't know what caused it I am so uneasy because not knowing what caused it means it could happen again Me and my husband cannot take our eyes off him for a moment So I am asking anywhere looking for ideas or suggestions on what this could be I am so unable to relax afraid this could happen again Do you have any ideas what could cause something like this to happen and what do you think the likelyhood of a repeat occurance could be I realieze this is a hard question but to our knowledge he was not bit by any bugs and hadn't eaten any new foods He did sustain a bumb to the head at a store he leaned back as I was carrying him and hit the side of his head on a card rack Please if you could offer any help I would appreciate it Thank you for you time
