Weaning yourself

I breastfed my 5 yr old for the first 9 months and one day he just went "cold turkey" on me. Decided he was done. He'd always supplemented with formula, even in the hospital. I didn't use my pump to wean my supply down and still, to this day, have feelings of engorgement & fullness. It gets painful. My gyno told me that I didn't need to wean myself and that it probably had something to do with my cycle & said to use a heating pad for the pain. Well, this happens ALL month long. I've tried different bras. I've tried using my pump (even though I dont express anything) it sometimes gives me relief from the soreness. I usually get a thick, white discharge from my nipples. My base-line mammogram (last summer) was negative and I have no lumps. I have recently contacted LaLeche but, have received no answer yet. Any advice? Is it possible to restart my supply and pump for a few weeks to wean properly? Anything to get rid of pain & swelling.
