decrease in milk supply help

Ask a Lactation Expert

I am desperately trying to figure out why all of a sudden my milk supply is decreasing My daughter is 18 weeks old and has been nursing pretty well the whole time All of sudden this weekend I've noticed my breasts less full so I started pumping a couple of times after nursing to stimulate some milk and to see how much I am getting after she is done To my shock I wasn't pumping anything out when she was done So I continued nursing over the weekend and just decided to see how much I pump at work on Monday Well at 9 am I pumped only 4 oz instead of the usual 5 or 6 oz Then at 3 pm I pumped 2 1/2 oz instead of 4 oz So my supply is drastically diminishing even though I'm not stressed or dieting The only thing I can think of that I have done differently is stopped using a nipple shield But I would think that would help She is only nursing for a total of about 15 minutes now instead of 20 or more minutes So I don't know if she stops nursing because my breasts are empty or if she is full She isn't fussy or seem hungry after I nurse One other thing I have been pumping 5 6 oz of milk but only giving the sitter 4 oz and having her add 2 oz of formula to make a total of 6 oz for her bottle I then freeze the extra milk to save But I have been doing that already for 2 3 weeks with no problem I'm so confused And the extra pumping is not working I am nursing 6 or 7 times a day and pumping 2 times (I was anyway now I'm pumping 4 times on top of the nursing) I really don't want to lose my milk and stop nursing please help

Expert Post Viewd: 722 Posted: 2/18/09 5:26 pm Posted by: Replies: 1

Questions about breast milk

Ask a Lactation Expert

Hi I have two questions about breast milk First my daughter is 8 mos old and breast feeding is going very well thankfully I work part time but am home more often than not so I feed my daughter at the breast a great deal of the time I pump two three times per day to keep a supply In the last couple of months my supply when I pump is much less than it used to be I can't stock any milk any more Is this normal Also I have a HUGE supply in the freezer but it is anywhere from 7 months old to a couple months old (The majority of it is 7 to 5 mos old) I spoke to my pediatrician about why breast milk in the freezer isn't supposed to be used after a certain amount of time She said that if I give my daughter one bottle a day of the older breast milk it should be fine She indicated that the older breast milk isn't bad just not as nutritious as the newer stuff What do you think I hate to throw it out I already threw some away and it fels terrible Also my pump seems to be "dying" I bought it new before the birth of my previous child and now it seems to be slowly dying (the motor) It is a Medela Is there anywhere that does "tune ups" What should I do Thanks Rachel

Expert Post Viewd: 784 Posted: 2/16/09 1:30 am Posted by: Replies: 1

Cold medicines for me while breast feeding baby

Ask a Lactation Expert

Hi I am breast feeding my daughter She is 8 mos old and it is going wonderfully (I am happy to say) I am pretty conservative with regards to what I eat/drink and take medicine wise I don't drink alcohol at all and really limit my caffeine I currently have a TERRIBLE chest cold and cough I went to the doctor and he said to take Chloresptic losenges I actually bought Halls Breezes without menthol but they do have pectin Can I use these while breast feeding Also is there a cough medicine I can take either prescription or over the counter My doctor didn't know of any but if there is one I would like to know because I can't sleep due to this persistent dry cough He also prescribed me an antibiotic the Z pack Is this safe to use He said only to fill it if I really feel I need it Also I have been wondering about Splenda (the artificial sweetner) use while breast feeding Thanks Rachel

Expert Post Viewd: 720 Posted: 2/16/09 1:15 am Posted by: Replies: 1

Ask a Lactation Expert

I breastfed my 5 yr old for the first 9 months and one day he just went "cold turkey" on me Decided he was done He'd always supplemented with formula even in the hospital I didn't use my pump to wean my supply down and still to this day have feelings of engorgement & fullness It gets painful My gyno told me that I didn't need to wean myself and that it probably had something to do with my cycle & said to use a heating pad for the pain Well this happens ALL month long I've tried different bras I've tried using my pump (even though I dont express anything) it sometimes gives me relief from the soreness I usually get a thick white discharge from my nipples My base line mammogram (last summer) was negative and I have no lumps I have recently contacted LaLeche but have received no answer yet Any advice Is it possible to restart my supply and pump for a few weeks to wean properly Anything to get rid of pain & swelling

Expert Post Viewd: 760 Posted: 2/8/09 4:52 am Posted by: Replies: 2

Ask a Lactation Expert

I am a brand new mother as of two weeks now My baby came a month early but everything is functional I started out exclusively feeding him breastmilk Recently at our two week check up his doctor told me I would have to start supplementing him because I do not have enough calories in my milk Is this normal that women have to do this and is there any way to increase the calories in my milk so that we do have to use a formula supplement

Expert Post Viewd: 733 Posted: 1/16/09 3:33 pm Posted by: Replies: 1

Ask a Lactation Expert

Hello Heather I began menstruating 2 days ago and noticed that my milk supply has decreased simultaneously Does this go hand in hand If the decreased milk supply is due to menstruating will the supply increase when I stop flowing My Jonas is only 5 months and has nursed beautifully I have pumped daily since he ws 5 weeks old when I returned to work But the last two days have been difficult to pump a sufficient amount to leave with the nanny for him Any thoughts Thank you Monica

Expert Post Viewd: 770 Posted: 1/9/09 7:55 pm Posted by: Replies: 1
