Pediatric Gastroenterologist Expert

I have a seven week old baby that screams after every feeding It doesn't seem to matter how much he eats but as soon as he's done he starts screaming and nothing seems to help him There are times that he's whimpering as if he's in pain as he's drinking Sometimes he sucks on it and is spitting milk out the sides between the nipple and his mouth Thinking that maybe he's done eating I've tried giving him a pacifier but he refuses it and keeps on screaming He's been on Acid Reflux meds since he was two weeks old Starting out at 15 mg of dissolvible previcid and when that wasn't working his Dr put him on Zantac That didn't help at all so we went back to the previcid but at the 30 mg doseage He's been on that now for almost two weeks and I don't see any improvement He used to eat every three hours now he's eating every two and "snacking" in between We've had an UGI done only to be told he's got "minor" acid reflux He only naps/sleeps either in his swing or bouncy seat or if you're holding him For the last two and a half weeks he's been up all night screaming Any thoughts or suggestions that you have would be appreciated

Expert Post Viewd: 1 Posted: 11/7/08 5:23 pm Posted by: Replies: 0

Gassy Baby & Nipple Size

Pediatric Gastroenterologist Expert

I have a 3 1/2 month baby at home and is currently using the first level nipple (for 0 3mth) he always had a reflux problem since he was born Two weeks ago we changed the nipple to the second level (for 3 6mth) because it was taking him long too feed and often he falls asleep sucking He is able to latch on the second level nipple once we get him going However because he is such an aggressive feeder he usually gags the first few sucks and milk also goes up his nose hence he became adverse to the bottle and will not feed So we switched him back to the level one nipple now that we regained his trust again we are not sure when he is ready for the next level nipple Recently we noticed that he is very gassy and is uncomfortable when passing gas Again he will not feed when passing gas and this gassiness is also waking him up during his sleep Is this gas due to the extended amount of sucking that he is doing with the level one nipple Please help my husband and I is not sure whether we should switch him to the second level nipple I was also advise to put a pin through the first level nipple which may help the situation He's been using the Dr Brown bottle since he was 2 month which helps eliminate air swallowing when feeding

Expert Post Viewd: 2 Posted: 10/27/08 4:06 pm Posted by: Replies: 0

Pediatric Gastroenterologist Expert

We have gone from Nestle Good Start to a soy based formula then I notice thin blood streaks in her stool Blood tested positive at the Peds office so they put him on Nutrimigen He has been on it now for about 6 weeks and has finally tested negative for blood in his stool Does this mean that he is allergic to milk and soy and will be able to go back to a less expensive formula My nephew (brother's kid) has terrible food allergies and I am so concerned that my son is going to have the same problems

Expert Post Viewd: 1 Posted: 9/5/08 8:31 pm Posted by: Replies: 0

My seven week old son is exclusively breast fed but spits up a ton

Pediatric Gastroenterologist Expert

My seven week old son is exclusively breast fed but spits up a ton This happens not only right after a feeding but also several hours after a feeding It is usually chunky like spoiled milk He is also very fussy all the time I've tried keeping him elevated during feedings are for an hour after but it doesn't seem to help the spit up or fussiness at all I also burp him after each breast He is gaining weight During several feeding perday he will nurse well at one breast and then burp But when I try to offer the second he screams and arches his back He will refuse the second breast and cry inconsolably for 30 min to an hour until he finally takes the second (I try offering multiple times during this) Nothing seems to sooth him The spitting up also causes a lot of gagging and choking (he is my third breastfed child) Any suggestions

Expert Post Viewd: 113 Posted: 8/5/08 12:36 am Posted by: Replies: 1
