lack of sleep

I cannot figure out why my 10 month old is not sleeping at night...he never really has since he was born.  He is solely breastfed with some solid foods--he\'s not very interested, no smooth foods served off a spoon, only table food from mom.  He naps fairly regularly during the day but at night he wakes up every 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours, rarely any 4 or 5 hour stints.  He has had multiple colds this year, go figure I thought breastfeeding minimized some of this, who knows??.  This is my third kiddo and I just can\'t figure this kiddo out??  I goty him, along with myself and my 2 other children the flu shot earlier this month.  He naps some during the day, at least 2 times for 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours.  he seems pretty easy-going most days but at night he just will not sleep for any long periods od time.  Its difficult to let him cry it out at night because his crib is in my husband and I\'s room, we have a little home.  Nothing really make sense, nor is consistent as to why he\'s not sleeping--is it his teeth??does he have an ear infection, is he sick, no sign of sickness, is he hungry?I just do not know!!  I keep coming back to maybe he can just not sooth himself back to sleep once he wakes up??  He does not use a pacifier and suck anything (my older two did ,which they had no problem sleeping at night).  Any suggestions as to how to get a child to self-sooth??  I am desperate for some sleep ASAP.  Thanks for listening.

If it is any solace to you, well I face the same thing too. My 10 month old wakes up atleast twice in the night. So it is still new born days for me. Here's what the paediatrician said - "Night terror" is a common problem with infants above 6 months. When they cry with their eyes closed, it means they have been dreaming and that dream is affecting them because of which they cry. Solution is to not switch on the light or feed but to rock them gently, pacify and put them back to sleep.

This is easier said than done. Practically, when he still keeps crying, I give him plain water in a bottle. That puts him back to sleep. According to the doctor, it is not good to feed often in the middle of the night as their teeth can go bad!

Hope this helps!

I also am facing the problem. My 11 month old has way more bad nights than good. About 5 nights of the week she'll wake up anywhere from 2-6 times, sometimes staying up for an hour or more. I can not figure out the problem, the only thing the doctor said was "it's common" and he told me to either put ear plugs in or continue to get up all night and basically just deal with it till she grows out of it! We share a room so that makes it even harder because if I so much as move in my bed she wakes up! Even though it's common I feel like if I keep trying to figure out what keeps her up I will be able solve the problem. I have tried eliminating things from her diet, like bread, vegetables at night, then fruit at night, then dairy at night. And she doesn't eat any sugary foods like cookies or anything. So that's the only advice I can give, so far it hasn't worked for me but Hopefully it can for someone else.!!!! Good Luck
