It depends on the child. For some children, mostly girls, parents can begin to introduce the potty around two, sometimes as early as 18 months. Generally, 30 months is often when parents begin. Then with patience and diligence, not pressure, most children will be potty trained by 3 to 3 1/2 years. Some children, especially boys take longer. For most, urinating is easier and bowel movements take longer to train for potty. Sometimes it becomes more difficult if the child is afraid of the bowel movement and holds back, causing constipation, which causes pain on movement and it becomes a vicious cycle that lengthens the process. Stool softeners help in those situations. Soiling one's underwear on a regular basis (not counting "accidents") after age 5, may be signs of other issues and should be addressed with the doctor.Read More |
