Ask a Child Development Expert

My daughter is 3 1/2 years old She don't go to pre school yet I plan on sending her in September She hardly plays with other children her age I take her to parks zoo shows etc When I take her to the park she will stay right by my side To me she seems to have a shy personality My son is 23 now and was shy too I am a over protective Mom however I want to do what is best for her She gets lots of outdoor and indoor play My inner being tells me she will struggle somewhat when she starts pre school but I do feel she will make her way through without having any kind of long term problems When she does play with children she plays well with them She does play often with adults and by no means do I think this is a subsitute for playing with children I would like your veiws as a expert Do you think I am molding my daughter to be a loner or do you feel I am neglecting her and going to cause her to have social problems

I seem to feel I am doing fine in raising my child but my mother in law that is a 2nd grade teacher seems to think I am doing the wrong thing

Thanks

Rosemarie

Expert Post Viewd: 32 Posted: 6/7/08 4:35 am Posted by: Replies: 1

Ask a Child Development Expert

My daughter is three years old and sleeps in our bed at night She will sleep in her bed during nap but we are almost done with naps When she was born she had some health problems so i started her in our bed About six months we began her in her crib we started her out crying herself to sleep and within two weeks Then we sold our house and moved in with the in laws We could not let her cry we could not let her make a sound because a sister in law worked graveyard shift So back in our bed she went Now she is three years old and is in our bed We have tried to bring her toddler bed into our room and that worked for two days and then she would get so upset that she would make herself vomit We tried putting her toddler bed back in her room and playing music and waiting till she would fall asleep but that didn't work She would stay awake for two hours and then want to sleep with us Now we have another child on the way and they will be sharing a room Do you think that when this child is born that she will sleep in her bed or what can I do now to get her to do this I don't want her to vomit and choke on it

Also my child can get herself so worked up that she can make her self vomit How do I stop this Is this because she is not getting her way and so she thinks that if she does this that it will get her way How do I stop this

Expert Post Viewd: 226 Posted: 1/29/08 1:44 pm Posted by: Replies: 1

Swaddling Issues

Ask a Child Development Expert

Christine

my baby will be 3 months old in 2 days I have been swaddling her for sleep since birth and have had much success she seems to love sleeping while swaddled Lately since she is becoming stronger and bigger she is able to wrestle her hands free and when her hands are by her face she immediately wakes herself and is unable to sleep (cries fusses etc ) Any suggestions on how to either wean her off of swaddling or any other ideas you may have would be much appreciated I do realize that babies cannot be swaddled indefinitely and she is showing signs of recognizing her hands (ie: reaching for things sucking fists) but while she is asleep she is still waking herself up with her hands touching her face I would just like to stop swaddling gradually so as not to create huge sleep problems while while getting her used to sleeping with her hands free

Expert Post Viewd: 214 Posted: 2/5/08 4:32 pm Posted by: Replies: 1

Ask a Child Development Expert

I really don't know how this behavior just happens but my 16 month old son started having temper tantrums around 13 months If I tell him no (when he slams his hands onto my glass china cabinet) and tell him why he shouldn't do that or when I give him his milk and he throws his binky on the floor and I ask him to pick it up and hand it to me he throws himself on the floor and screams arms going crazy in the air Once I give in and in the above situation get his binky and give him his milk he laughs and is perfectly happy Is this behavior normal in this age group or has he reach the so called "terrible two's" a lot earlier then most I watch super nanny and try to adjust the time out corner for a few seconds at a time when he does this I think he gets he did something hes not suppose to but he either gets more upset and trys to walk away or he laughs at me and thinks were playing a game Everyone says I'm crazy; that he's too young to start to disapline How can I help him to understand "no" means "no"; that it's not a joke He's very smart and I think he is definatly learning to "get his way" already

Expert Post Viewd: 173 Posted: 2/15/08 11:49 am Posted by: Replies: 1

Ask a Child Development Expert

My son turned 3 in October and he still has no interest in the potty I have gotten him to sit on it a few times but most of the time he gets scared as soon as I go to take his diaper off He doesn't communicate too great either he will tell us when he did go in his pants but not when he HAS to go His grandparents keep pushing the issue by going as far as fighting with us about it or yelling at him for messing his pants I am not sure if I should push the issue on him because I always felt that when hes ready he will let me know If I am right then how do I get everyone else to stop pushing it If I am wrong then what can I do to get him trained on the potty Please help

Expert Post Viewd: 218 Posted: 1/2/08 9:47 pm Posted by: Replies: 1
