My 2 year old smears poo out of his nappy!

Hello, I hope you can help me

My 2 year old is generally well behaved but in the last month or so has become very naughty which I suppose is just down to his age. Yesterday morning I went to get him from his cot and was hit by an awful smell of poo as he had 'painted' it onto the wall next to him, all over his cot and thrown some onto the floor he then asked me if I would like to do some drawing

I told him off and put it down to a one-off thing. Later that day he went for a nap and did the exact same thing again, he knows it was wrong as he told me he was naughty as I came into the room. I slapped his hand (not hard but so he knew I was cross) and told him in a strict voice that he was naughty and put him in the bath to clean him with the shower hose which he hates. I hoped this experience would put him off doing it

Unfortunately this morning he has done it again. Last night I put him to bed a in a full-body-suit that zips up at the front in an attempt to stop him but he has worked out how to unzip it.

Can you please tell me how I should proceed in dealing with him over this matter?

Thanks

While it isn't exactly common, it is not unheard of for two year olds to find their poop fascinating. It is not acceptable, however, and your discomfort is understandable. FIrst, I would try to make sure your little one has plenty of opportunity to play and get messy in ways that you find tolerable. He may need an outlet to make a mess, and if he doesn't have one, he may be using his poop. Now is the time to offer finger paints and clay as art materials, and to explain to him that he may paint on paper with the paints you give him, and smear clay on a covered table, or play in the mud in the yard when you say. Also, try not to get too angry or reactive when he does this - he has found a way to get a lot of attention, and if he is in need of attention form you, you want to .... Read More signin
