Question Hi I have two questions to ask of you first being I have a 4 mth old son that has had cold like symptoms for over a month now   These symptoms consist of runny nose sneezing coughing and congested chest aside from these symptons he is otherwise a healthly baby eats and sleeps normally   He is not lathargic whatsoever   I just wanted to know if these symptons are consistent with those of babies who are allergic to cats or dogs ( I have one of each)   I just put the two together a few days ago and I would like to know what can be done to see if it is the pets that are causing him to have these symptoms Well that is my first question   My second is concerning my other son who is 3 yrs old   I believe that he has stuck something up his nose   I started noticing a while ago that there was a bad odor coming from that area of his face at first I thought it waqs his breath but then noticed it was coming from his nose   I bought a spray that did dislodge some dried lood from his nose (which also had that odor)   Now the odor is gone but I can see something up his nose I am not sure if it is mucos or a foreign object   His breathing is fine so whatever he has up his nose is not blocking his air passage way   Should I be taking him to the hospital or just leave it alone seeing that it does not seem to be bothing him at all and the bad odor is gone Thank you for any advice you can give me   Maria  MARIA 0 546 12/27/07 7:27 pm   swollen tummy Question I have a question My daughter is 5 weeks old I fed her a bottle she went to sleep It has been about 4 hours ago She woke up irritable I changed her diaper She has very watery diarrhea and her tummy is really swollen What do I do paulas247 0 415 12/23/07 11:27 pm   sushi & breastfeeding Question I knew I could not have sushi while I was pregnant but what about now that I am breastfeeding Do we follow the same "do not eat" list as we did while pregnant gratefulkelli 0 525 11/28/07 2:34 pm   lingering RSV effects or allergies? Question My son had RSV from 3 4 months and now just had a bad enough respiratory cold to put him back on the steroids and neb at 11 months for 1 week Before he was diagnosed with RSV another Dr (at a walk in clinc he perscribed him Zyrtec for environmental allergies I didn't give it to him because I knew he was wheezing in his lungs and knew it was more ) In between these 2 bouts I feel like I'm always having to give him triamenic yellow to help with his decongestion but it never works  I understand teething can cause some of the irritation in his sinuses but he has other respiratory symtoms When he gets really active he huffs and puffs and starts to wheeze and he gets a runny nose often He doesn't cough too much but if I don't give him anything thinking it just teething he seems to get worse and then he's back on meds His eyes seem to get red rings around them and just look irritated  The ped 's nurse practitioner that I go to mentioned he could have further respiratory problems developing such as asthma or he could just grow out of all this I'm concerned because both my brother and I had various respiratory concerns as babies and were both in oxygen tents at one point and have had to use nebulizers all our lives when we get sick  I myself kept passing out during athletic practice or high intensity workouts and was told it might be asthma  however after 10 years was diagnosed with multiple heart valve regurgitations   Should I be concerned that he may have future allergy complications or can he be developing allergies  What can I do to help determine that cause of his frequent wheezing and shortness of breath What are signs of asthma I should look for just in case THanks Froggy's mom 0 479 9/28/07 11:54 pm   Peanut butter and pregnant Question I have heard some scary stories of people dying from peanut allergies I hear about peanut allergies more and more Does anyone know why someone can get an allergy like this I am pregnant and have not had any peanut butter at all for fear of hurting the baby it might sound stupid but it took me a while to conceive this child I am a worrier so if I avoid things all together then I won't worry There are no food allergies that I know of on either side of the baby's family I just want to know if eating peanut butter during pregnancy will harm the baby Lisa777 0 502 9/20/07 8:28 pm   is it allergies? Sinuses~Zyrtec~Vicks Question I have been on Zyrtec for 6 months now   When I had first gone on it I had a sinus infection for over 9 10 mos(too much going on/unable to get to the doctor office not working mother friendly ) the Doctor had put me on two doses of anti biotics and Zyrtec   It was great at first for the first time in years I was able to smell everything   That has since gone by the wayside and now I am battling another sinus infection and am on Arythromiacin(spelling ) since yesterday   My nose is totally stuffed up and I am unable to breath   I have tried nasal flushes saline drops sinus sprays etc to no avail   I sort of remember someone telling me to put Vicks up my nose have looked for info on the net about it but no recommendations   I have ut a little up my nose and it seems to be giving some relief but wondered if it was ok and how much/often it can be done for relief (No I haven't gone to the doctor again called in for a scrip which he filled thankfully would was off the Cefzil for about 10 days (first time off abx in 6 months) and started having severe symptoms: frontal headache coughing all night clearing the throat fever in the evenings flushed face etc Saw ENT here in Atlanta on Monday last week put on Augmentin 3000mg a day and a week later did a ct scan yesterday The maxillary sinuses seem to be clear but the right ethmoid air cells and the frontaloethmoid recess is completely opacified I talked with Dr Tichenor there in New York he recommends that it is a very high possibility of needing a third sinus surgery He wants us to come to New York and see Dr Anand Of course insurance will only pay out of network and needless to say our expenses thus far have been well ALOT I would love to send the ct to you and get your opinion and see is the history written over the last few months Below are my questions Thanks in advance for reading such a long note We are the parents of an 8 y/o girl History of om at 6 8 weeks of age severe blocked tear ducts chronic sinus infections She was on Augmentin 21 days at a time with breaks of 7 10 days then would have to do it again We had 3 4 tear duct surgeries done ear tubes placed and sinus surgery all before she was 2 years old Allergy testing led us nowhere through this The sinus surgery and tear duct surgery done around 2or so seemed to have helped tremendously We had several bouts of strep throat pharyngitis over the years About 1 1/2 years ago noticed the eyes not draining again Cough clearing the throat began Tried abx patenol eye drops flonase nasonex etc In Feb 2006 had an external DCR done to get the eyes to drain The doctor stated after the surgery that there was a significant amount of scar tissue and that the tear ducts seem to be congenitally not in the right place Stents placed for months abx for 2 weeks and the surgery did not work In the meantime had tonsils taken out in July Then did another external DCR used mitomycin to decrease the scar tissue formation Augmentin for 2 3 weeks tobradex/ciloxan eye gtts Nasonex tubes left for 3 months It still has not worked My understanding is that this is pretty rare I am a pediatric nurse my boss my daughters doctor stated she had never seen anything like her tear duct issues even as an infant and still states she has never seen anything like this before We had a ct scan done on Friday 12/06 Her eyes are continuously wet if I use drops then the drainage is clear if I stop it is green and thick She is constantly wiping her eyes irritating her face coughing etc Has NO drainage coming from the nose it seems to be draining backwards to some extent causing the clearing of the throat Update: Ct scan does show complete opacification of all sinuses Seen an allergist/immunologist Wednesday negative for any allergies he does not feel it is immunological I was negative for Cystic Fibrosis checked during pregnancy She is now taking Augmentin ES at 3200mg a day for 4 weeks The plan is to re do the ct scan and go from there My concern is even with improvement on the ct scan is it possible that she will still need some sort of sinus reconstructive surgery No anatomical abnormalities were seen on the CT scan I worry that we have improvement then 3 months from now we are in the same situation I feel she was on abx the first 18 months of life Still ending up with the FESS Also all allergy and immunological testing is negative Latest update 2/28/07Sinus surgery 2/1/07 Dr White stated the abx and steroids helped the sinuses were improved He was able to find the dcr on the right He probed it and removed a large granulation polyp (fibro osseus material) from the opening He was unable to find the left opening at all It was difficult to get into the left side of the nose due to a deviated septum in which the turbinate is far into the left nasal passageway The right eye seemed to be much better and the left is not She finished Augmentin two weeks ago The drainage seems to be turning thicker at times and green from the left eye Now 5 days ago she has begun again to clear the throat sniffle etc The right does appear to be draining slower than normal again We have seen this week 2 more occuloplastics docs Both state the only option is to continue with another external dcr However they both say that the sinuses have to be 100 clear before performing the dcr again They are not convinced the sinus issue is resolved Dr Ben White here in Atlanta has suggested going in to surgery together with the occuloplastic dr I am at a lost Not sure if more abx therapy is needed more sinus surgery (although I am not sure what else is there to do) another ct scan to see about improvement March 13 2007Flew to New York to see Dr Tichenor All immunological and Cystic Fibrosis Sweat test were negative The endoscopy done in the office showed very small openings swollen red inflamed tissue The cultures came back moderate staph susceptible to just about everything We had her on Biaxin for 4 weeks better for the first 2 weeks then at week 3 began coughing clearing the throat etc Then put on Cefzil now for 3 weeks Not really better not worse My biggest issue now is that all the occuloplastic surgeon will not redo the external DCRs until her sinuses are clear I am not sure if they ever will be I am not as concerned about the sinuses as I am the tear duct issues Her eyes water constantly Going from clear to green She has been on abx since 12/06 continuously with the exception of about 10 days total I am grasping at straws It was my hope that the trip to New York would have provided some answers and I seem to be at square one I do not know if it is worth having the occuloplastics guy go in with my ENT guy and look around together Any suggestions would be appreciated
